Good news! Your browser is no longer an issue and the cause you're limited to sRGB colors.

Most browsers now support color definition also in CIELAB, CIELCh, Oklab, Oklch. (It means that web developers finally can define colors outside the sRGB gamut, like colors of print gamuts, or any real-life colors and even colors you can't see.)

Latest technology has made it possible for devices with extended gamut (P3 color spaces) to become widespread. (These still don't include all colors possible in print or with art materials, or what your eyes can see.)

Be aware that wider gamut alone doesn't guarantee color accuracy.

A visual example is how the HLC Colour Atlas (which is CIE L*C*h defined, and uses the CIE L*a*b* color space) is displayed digitally.

  • Notice the dots which represent real-life art material colors from our database.
  • Grey areas are out of sRGB / P3 gamuts.
  • Many dots go beyond these gamuts, and even the gamut of the HLC Colour Atlas XL colors.

(Meaning that many real-life colors still can't be accurately displayed on usual digital devices.)

P3 covers all the reds, oranges, yellows within the HLC Colour Atlas XL, but not all the colors with these hues in our Art materials database.

You get significantly more greens, cyans, blues in P3 with chroma/saturation that sRGB seriously lacks. But again, it still can't show you all those colors that are possible in print and with art materials.

Some statistics

How many colors of the HLC Colour Atlas XL (13283 colors in total) are out of

  • P3 gamut? 1274 (9.6%)
  • sRGB gamut? 2631 (20%)

How many colors in our database with CIELAB data (10478 colors in total) are out of

  • P3 gamut? (8.5%)
  • sRGB gamut? (21%)

We use this icon to indicate when the measured color is out of your display gamut. Usually it means that the original color would be more saturated than what can be displayed on that lightness. (The displayed color can be significantly different if gamut mapping / color clipping happens in certain areas of the color space where the display gamut is the most deficient.)

Visualizing colors that are out of the sRGB or P3 gamut, with their coordinates in CIELAB, Oklab or CIECAM color spaces can help to imagine them and their attributes (hue, chroma, lightness) when comparing them to other similar in-gamut (or physically owned / known) colors.
